Healing through the Power of Nature

The sounds, colors, textures, aromas and flavors of nature are delightful to our senses. People instinctively turn to nature as a way to relax and enhance their well-being. Nature can be a source of inspiration, solace, guidance and regeneration that brings so much needed peace to our lives.

Allowing ourselves to be in nature and be absorbed by all that it has to offer can have a healing effect in our psyche. In some cultures, psychotherapists and doctors prescribe daily nature walks as part of their treatment. They do this because ancient traditions know that the healing energy of nature works in a subtle way as we connect to it. They know that nature is embedded in our DNA and is able to transport us to deeper states as we spend time in it.

The rhythms and forms of nature can be transformative and healing if we let ourselves experience them openly. Doing so allows us to experience the wonders of the earth with all our senses which takes us out of our heads and into  the present moment. This helps us develop a sense of awareness and find peace from the business of the world and the internal noise that we all deal with on a daily basis. Nature allows us to shift our attention to ourselves and experience our feelings in different ways as we identify ourselves as part of nature. We belong to nature. We are whole in nature. That recognition shows us that we are inextricably connected to the universe and have a purpose.

I want to share with you about the Strolls for Wellbeing at #Morikami Japanese Gardens in South Florida. This program is a FREE resource for those seeking a better quality of life. Through my experience facilitating their group sessions I have learned that participants who immerse themselves in the natural beauty, peace and serenity of the gardens are able to decrease their feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fear and loneliness, and increase feelings of joy and connectedness. The benefits of therapeutic garden walks for individuals suffering from stress, depression or mental exhaustion are research-supported and significant.

When struggling with anxiety, depression, or just needing some time to reflect about an important decision you need to make, go to nature and spend some time connected to your surroundings, give yourself a break and allow nature to present new answers through its wisdom. Nature doesn’t rush and yet everything is completed, it doesn’t criticize itself and accepts the natural changes of the environment. In nature there’s a place for everything and everyone. Nature is fluid and vast. Open your mind to nature’s flexibility and freshness.
